Failure of food supply
Food security means that there is always a sufficient quantity of healthy and varied food available. This ensures that people have enough to eat, mitigates food price fluctuations and meets the growing demand for food.

What can you do?
BEFORE
Include a food reserve in your emergency kit, consisting of foods with a long shelf life, such as dry foods or canned goods.
DURING
- Be economical with food. Make sure vulnerable people (such as children and the elderly) have enough nutritious food.
- Do not stock up on food unnecessarily. Be considerate and only buy a reasonable amount of food. That way, there is enough for everyone.
AFTER
The food supply will gradually resume. For some products, it may take longer. Do not stock up on food unnecessarily.
Impact and probability
The figures relating to probability and impact describe a extreme failure in the food supply. The BNRA theoretically describes such a scenario as follows:
- There is a prolonged problem with the supply of food, with no possibility of importing food from external sources.
- The situation lasts more than 8 months or persists for more than 4 months a year for 3 consecutive years.
- As a result, 20% of households do not have enough food in their homes, which can lead to famine.
How should you interpret these results?
Within the BNRA, experts assessed three scenarios for each risk: considerable, major or extreme. On each page, you will find the results of the scenario with the highest score based on the combination of likelihood and impact. This does not mean that this scenario will occur or is the most likely. Read more here about how to correctly interpret the results.

What do the authorities do?
The FPS Economy is responsible for monitoring the supply of food in our country.
