Road traffic accident

A road accident is an accident involving at least one vehicle on a public road, and at least one person. The road is then blocked for a period of time.

For example: a rear-end collision, a head-on collision, a collision when overtaking or changing direction, or other types of collision (with parked vehicles, when changing lanes, etc.).

Impact and probability

The figures relating to probability and impact describe a large-scale road accident. The BNRA theoretically describes such a scenario as follows:

  • An accident occurs involving between 20 and 200 vehicles, one or two buses and a number of trucks.
  • A major road is blocked for between 5 and 24 hours on a working day.
